Mike is originally from Brentwood, Maryland, attended the University of Maryland, and graduated in 1989 with a degree in Accounting.  After starting his public accounting career in Bethesda, Maryland, Mike and his wife, Lorna, relocated to Roanoke in 1991.  He and Lorna, now reside in Botetourt County, and are the proud parents of two children(Evan and Sara), and have three Grandchildren.

During his professional career, now spanning more than 30 years, Mike has worked in both public accounting and corporate accounting.  The majority of that time has been spent in public accounting.  He has been a licensed CPA since 1995, and he has been with Cole, McIlwain & Company since 2012.  His current area of expertise is small business accounting and tax preparation.  Mike enjoys working with business owners to help them achieve their goals, professionally and financially…..not just file a tax return…..and he focuses on the whole picture, from the client’s business goals, their personal tax planning, the owner’s children’s college planning, the owner’s retirement planning, and ultimately Estate and Trust issues.

In addition, Mike believes that helping clients with their internal Accounting is equally as important as reporting on his client’s results.  To that end, Mike became a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and enjoys using that training to help clients save time and become more efficient with their internal bookkeeping, which also provides clients with the ability to see real-time results of their business.

Mike is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and also a member of a local Knights of Columbus council.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys working with children.  Mike coached youth soccer and baseball for several years while his children were playing.  Mike is a die-hard Baltimore Orioles fan, and also enjoys golf and bowling.
